Why Missions?

Acts 2:14-21

With all the needs in our own community, why should we send people and money to other places in the world? The Day of Pentecost holds some answers for us — at least by way of application. Are you involved in missions? Should this be on "your radar?" How can you make an impact in the world from where you live? Consider some truths from Peter's sermon on that amazing Festival Day.

  1. This is Not That...
    Peter acknowledged the mockers and disarmed their criticism with the reminder that they were not drunk, it was only 9am.
    However, they were "under the influence"...of the Holy Spirit! (see Ephesians 5:18)
  2. This is That!
    1. The Context of the Prophecy: About 900 years earlier, Joel had written about the events they were witnessing. (Joel 2:28-32)
    2. A reminder about the nature of prophecy.
    3. Application for Today...
      • We join God in His mission "between the peaks."
      • To be missional is to think/live with that in mind.
      • Missions is to "send."
      • A Missionary is "sent."
      • All believers should be involved...praying, giving and/or going.

Conclusion

  • Believers should be missional.
  • To be missional is to be involved in some way in missions.
  • Please pray about your involvement in missions through praying, giving and/or going.

  3. How are you involved in missions?
