- The Great Claim2
All authority! The reign of the King extends beyond earth to the universe! In His name and on His behalf, we are authorized to proclaim His exclusive message and engage in His redemptive and restorative mission.
- The Great Commission
- The Mandate:
The marching orders were given…”Make disciples!” When and where? As we go…anywhere and everywhere. Of whom? All kinds of people!
- The Means/Method:
- Immerse believers as a symbol of their immersion into the Triune presence and life of God.
- Instruct believers to observe, to obey, to do everything Jesus taught. We are not commissioned to make “converts” but rather, to make disciples. This involves teaching and modeling. This is the mission of the church.
- The Great Comfort
We are not alone! This global endeavor is aided by omnipotence. Jesus is with us to the end of the age. He will never leave us nor forsake us.
And, after these instructions, the disciples went back to Jerusalem where Jesus appeared...
- To James, His half-brother, 1 Corinthians 15:7
- To the disciples, Luke 24 and Acts 1
- And He ascended into Heaven while the disciples watched, Luke 24, Acts 1:9-12
AND, the Story Continues :)
Questions for Small Group, Family and Self Reflection
- Jesus claimed in Mt. 28:18 that "All authority in Heaven and Earth has been given to Me." What is the source of Jesus' authority? Consider Colossians 1:15-20 and other sources to explain why Christ is worthy of following, obeying and worshiping.
- Jesus commissioned His followers to "...teach them to observe all that I have commanded you." Are there teachings of Christ that we tend not to observe? What steps do you need to take to learn to observe ALL of Christ's commandments?
- Read Acts 1. How are you a part of this on-going story?
