The Cross, Pt. 2

Jul 10, 2016 Sunday AM
Matthew 27:45-50

Last week we considered the words that other people said to Christ while He was on the cross. This week we'll consider the words Jesus said to others. The contrast is profound. While He was being mocked, He was blessing. While He was being accused, He was caring for others. While the weight of the world's sin was on His shoulders, He was caring for us.

Study Notes

  1. "Father forgive..." Luke 23:34
The application for us is not hard to see…
    1. Forgiveness must be received. Jesus did everything possible to make it available.
    2. Forgiveness is “the way of Jesus.” As His followers we are to love as He loved.

  2. "Today...Paradise" Luke 23:43
“This is one of the greatest Biblical illustrations of justification by faith.” --John MacArthur

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast.” Eph. 2:8, 9

  3. "Woman, behold your son..." John 19:26, 27
In the midst of His suffering, Jesus kept the law and demonstrated His concern for others. Mary was very likely a widow and her other children were distant. Jesus committed her to John’s care. He was her Savior AND her son.

  4. "God, why have you forsaken Me?" Matthew 27:46
This is the most difficult saying from the cross to comprehend. How could God forsake God? How could Father abandon Son? As Jesus
became sin for us, the Father had to look away. Jesus bore our sins alone.

    Isaiah 53:6
“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

    2 Corinthians 5:21
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

    Galatians 3:13
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree")”.

  5. "I thirst" John 19:28
The Creator of water, the One who sends rain, the King of the Universe was thirsty. Even in His thirst He sought help and this was only so He could make an announcement and proclaim a closing prayer.

  6. "Tetelestai" John 19:30
The three words in English are one word in Greek. “It is finished” means the debt had been paid. It means sin’s curse had been lifted. It
means we can have life with God forever. No extra credit is required…

  7. "Father, into Your hands..." Luke 23:46
A bed time prayer from Psalm 31:5 is a tender and comforting way to end this sacrifice for sin. Jesus had experienced the wrath of God and offered Himself to the Father’s mercy.

Conclusion

  1. Have you received God’s offer of forgiveness?
  2. Are you walking in the light of our benefits made possible through His cross?

Application

  • Do you have "issues" with forgiveness? Write out Jesus' prayer from Luke 23:34 on the top of a piece of paper and list the people you can forgive because Jesus' work for you.
  • Are you plagued by guilt? Write down your sins and then with a bold marker write over the top fo them, "Paid in Full." Do you believe it? smiley
