The Cross, Pt. 1

Matthew 27:27-44

The cross is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. It has been this way since the third century. It hasn't always been used properly or understood in the way the New Testament writers intended. Nevertheless, we consider it with Paul as a matter for glory...for it was on an old rugged cross that the destiny of mankind was altered forever (See Galatians 6:14).

Study Notes

  1. The Mocking of/by the Soldiers
    There is some disagreement among scholars about Matthew’s motive in including this paragraph. Was it simply to make this mocking
    of Jesus a matter of record? Or, was Matthew reminding us how ridiculous these actions really were…against the King of kings?
  2. "The Via Dolorosa"
    The Way of Grief/Suffering is remembered by the Stations of the Cross. Jesus needed help given His weakened state. In severe pain, He
    refused a narcotic even though He would taste death for every man.
  3. "At the Cross, at the Cross..."
    Jesus was on the cross for approximately six hours, (9am-3pm). While there, passers by, religious leaders and the criminals on either
    side of Him mocked Him. However, one of the men being crucified repented and was received into Paradise ☺.
  4. A Vicarious Death...
    Vicarious means “substitutionary,” in other words, Jesus Christ really took our place. The epistles explain just how real this vicarious
    death really was…the benefits of His death accrue to us by faith in ways that are hard to comprehend…

    • Jesus was crowned with thorns…

    • Jesus was stripped of His garments…

    • Jesus was mocked…

    • Jesus was considered a criminal…

    • Jesus DID NOT save Himself…

    • Jesus died on the cross…

    • Jesus was broken…

  • When you think about the soldier's treatment of Jesus, what comes into your mind?
