Study Notes

The text before us this morning is of incredible importance, from it we derive the beginning of what we call "the Eucharist," "Communion," or "The Lord's Table." Those who participate in this ordinance with a tender heart and ears to hear will strengthen their faith and their love for the Lord Jesus will grow. Jesus is the Passover Lamb that took away the sins of the world.

1. The Preparation
   Peter and John were sent to look for a "certain man" carrying water. They would have prepared the materials and the room for the Passover Supper. Lamb, bitter herbs, fruit sauce, salt water, wine, etc.
2. The Bombshell
   After the Cup of Remembrance, while they were eating, Jesus told them He knew one of them would betray Him. There was much sadness and self-doubt...but only one left to do what he had been planning..."and it was night."
3. The New Covenant
   1. The Symbol of the Bread
      Jesus gave thanks for the unleavened bread, and told the disciples that it represented His body. Since bread nourishes and sustains, Jesus was affirming that He was their Source of Life.
   2. The Symbol of the Cup
      Jesus took the 3rd Cup of Wine...the Cup of Redemption and told them that it would be His blood that brought about forgiveness of sins. The cross would be the inauguration of the new covenant! (See Jeremiah 31:31-34)
   3. The Promise of Life to Come
      Jesus did not take the 4th Cup...He said He would drink "The Cup of Praise" when He and they were together in the Father's Kingdom. This was something to look forward to!
