The King of Heaven dressed in flesh had been announcing the good reign of God for three years. A few apprentices had joined Him but the ones who should have known the ways of God were actually living contrary to His Word. They were users of religion and Jesus confronted them without fear or contempt. They needed it straight...so do we.
This text describes the contrast between apprentices and users of religion in eight different areas of life.
- Regarding the Kingdom...
- Apprentices repent, enter, and invite...
- Users refuse, close their hearts and actually slam the door for others that try to enter.
- Regarding the needy...
- Apprentices love, help and assist those in need.
- Users see needy people as vulnerable and take advantage of them for their own gain.
- Regarding the purpose...
- Apprentices try to bring people to the Savior-King.
- Users try to convert people to their system, cause opinion and agenda.
- Regarding integrity...
- Apprentices "let their yes be yes and their no be no."
- Users play word games to gain advantage for themselves and try to figure out how to avoid keeping their word.
- Regarding essentials...
- Apprentices focus on the weighty matters of justice, mercy and faithfulness.
- Users get preoccupied with non-essentials. They "strain out gnats but swallow camels."
- Regarding appearances...
- Apprentices are concerned about the inner life. They deal with sin at a "heart-level."
- Users want to make sure they look nice on the outside. They want to "keep up appearances," but avoid dealing with the inner life.
- Regarding effect on others...
- Apprentices refresh others...
- Users defile others. They are outwardly righteous but inwardly defiled and they defile others.
- Regarding the message...
- Apprentices honor the message from God.
- Users "honor the man" but ignore the message. They were building monuments to the prophets while looking for a way to kill the greatest of all Prophets that was standing in their midst!
Are you mad, sad or glad?
- Mad that you've been busted?
- Sad over the reality and convicted?
- Glad to be forgiven and in the process of transformation?
