Study Notes

Characteristics of the Early Church

  1. What God was doing:
    1. Authenticating the apostle's teaching
The "wonders and signs" gave the teaching validity.
    2. Adding people to the Body
When an individual repents and believes the gospel, the Lord "adds them" to the Body of Christ (see 1 Cor. 12:13).
  2. What the Church was doing:
    1. Caring for one another
They recognized all they had belonged to God and they were willing to share with those in need.
    2. Doing life together
They went to the Temple to worship together and they met in homes and ate together. They did what they did — together.
  3. What the "Climate" was like
    1. Awe
They lived in the recognition of Divine presence. They believed God was among them...because He is!
    2. Joy
Their life together was characterized by gladness and simplicity.
    3. Favor
The believers had favor with "all" the people. Considering their way of life, we shouldn't be surprised.

Conclusion

We cannot "do" exactly what they did. However, what they did helps us understand what is "normal" for the church...and what should characterize our individual lives.
