Generally speaking, when one applies for a new job, references are requested. People want to know what other people know. What the interviewer is after is an understanding of character, training, capacity and work ethic. No one wants to hire a bum. What if someone you know was thinking about following Jesus? He does have quite an impressive resume. He is the Creator of the universe, He sustains the universe by the word of His power, He is the express image of God’s Person, He has authority over all things because He owns everything and, He is the One who is putting the universe back together again. But, anyone can have an impressive resume. You can write down anything on paper and somebody will believe it. People try to impress people with resumes every day. The person who is thinking about following Jesus often wants more than a resume, they want references. Would you be a reference for Jesus? Have you found Him to be truthful, faithful, personable and timely? Does He complete the jobs He starts? Does He work well with others? How does He resolve conflict? Can He handle pressure? Is there anything else you would like to say that I haven’t asked you about? The letter to the Colossians contains an impressive resume of Jesus, I wonder if you would say you have found it to be true. 😀
