I have been on both the receiving and giving end of a problem. Sometimes I am telling a story and I can’t remember why I started telling it and sometimes I am hearing a story trying to figure what the point of the story may be. We’re funny about that as Americans, we are a people (generally) that believe in purpose and utilitarian efficiency. We have things to do, places to go and people to see. When someone stops us for a story, it seems like there ought to be a point ☺. Do you ever wonder what the point of the gospel writers may be? Why does Matthew tell us what He tells us and so often leave us with a story and no “moral.” Even the Daily Bread has a summary statement! The gospel account was not written as biography intent on giving us every detail of Jesus’ life. The four books known as the gospels have different points, some of the same stories are not in the same order and there are details from one author that we do not get from another. One of the key points of Matthew is to describe for the Jewish reader, the King and His Kingdom. Jesus is a different kind of King and He reigns over a different kind of Kingdom; a Kingdom that exists wherever Jesus is enthroned as King. We will not let Him take His rightful place (and He will allow us to do this) if we do not believe He knows what He is talking about. Or, if we believe His teaching, do we also believe the King is present and able to help us do what He taught? I am praying our study on Sunday will give us greater confidence in the King that we my enjoy the righteousness, peace and joy available to those in His reign.
