Green Pastures and Still Waters

The nice thing about preparing a sermon for Easter is that I don’t have to come up with a theme.  The hard thing about preparing a sermon for Easter is trying to figure out how to talk about that theme in a way that will catch people’s attention.  Some of you have heard dozens, if not more, Easter sermons.  You’ve heard a sermon from every resurrection chapter and you’ve probably even heard one from Job 19:25!  It’s okay to hear some things twice because the resurrection of Jesus really is that big of a deal.  I will quote Warren Wiersbe here because he says it so well, “If you remove the resurrection, Christianity is destroyed.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ affirms to us that He is indeed the Son of God, just as He claimed to be (Rom. 1:4).  It also proves that His sacrifice for sin has been accepted and that the work of salvation is completed (Rom. 4:24-25).  Those who trust Him can walk in newness of life because He is alive and imparts His power to them (Rom. 6:4; Gal. 2:20).  Our Lord’s resurrection also declares to us that He is the Judge who will come one day and judge the world (Acts 17:30,31).”  I think most of those who read this blog would not dispute the historical reality of the resurrection of Christ but, what we might miss is how much the resurrection means for our daily walk in the world.  It is that subject that I hope to address on Sunday morning as we consider this question, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”

An on-line dictionary gives this two-part definition of milestones, “1) a stone set up beside a road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place.  2) an action or event marking a significant change or stage in development.”  I’m interested in the second part of that definition because of what is happening on Sunday night this coming weekend.  I know many of you are not in the custom of coming on Sunday night and this is not a rebuke :-).  This is an invitation to two milestone events.  1) Three adult believers are going to be confessing their faith in Christ in the waters of baptism.  This is a milestone event for them as we join them and the saints through the ages celebrating our immersion into the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  2) We are having our official “groundbreaking” on the new addition.  Topsoil has been stripped and sand is in place but foundation work won’t start until next week.  We invite you all to come and bring a shovel.  Our groundbreaking is not for a few dignitaries with gold shovels.  This is a project for all of us…kids, adults, members, non-members etc.  We want as many people as possible to join us as we dedicate this new phase of our church ministry to God and His glory.  It has always been our desire to build the Building that occupies the building…that’s why we celebrate baptism.  But, it is also a good testimony for that Building to have a building in which to meet and that is why we are celebrating this groundbreaking.  Milestones don’t happen every week but we have two to celebrate this week.  Come on out ya’all!
